What Themes Are Missing In Worship Songs?

Just found these two videos on Youtube – they are from a TV filming I did in Canada recently.

The TV  show is called “100 Huntley Street” and their broadcasts reach 1.5 million viewers per week.

Realising that possibly 1.5 million people heard my songs that day on Huntley Street really got me thinking. I wondered “am I writing about things that people want to say? Am I writing about the right stuff?”

Are we as Christian songwriters/worship leaders/pastors, writing and using songs that say the right and needed things?

Or are there themes and topics in worship that our song repetoire just doesn’t cover?

What themes are missing from our churches, our songbooks and our CDs?

Some photos I took tonight…

Hi there!

I drove downtown to San Diego this evening, so while I was down there I pulled out my camera and took a few night-time shots of the city. The lights are so beautiful next to the water!

This one above, is the Coronado Bridge. It links San Diego city with Coronado Island.

And a few weird effects I created (for better or worse!…)

This shot of Coronado Bridge wins as my favorite…I liked it in black and white as well as the colored one above…so I kept both…

I really want to learn how to take photos… and I need to get Photoshop rather than good old “iPhoto”! But hey….even if my attempts aren’t awesome, I am trying!!

Any one got any advice for me… I’m using a Nikon D80 and a 17-70 lens. Feel free to let me know if there are other lenses that you’ve found cool….or whether there is other photo editing software you’d recommend besides Photoshop…

Grace vs Honesty….

Hey friends!

Had a good week?

Saw this picture and quote on someone else’s blog and thought I’d use it too!

Thoughts?

Vicky Beeching-Steve Fee co-write!

Hey friends!

If any of you are searching for some great music and haven’t got the last album by the band “Fee”, go buy it today! Steve Fee is a brilliant guy and a good friend of mine. He lives in Atlanta and leads worship at Northpointe Church, the Catalyst conferences and tours across the US.

We wrote a song together that he has just recorded in the studio for his forthcoming new album. It’s called “Glory To God Forever”. Fee has been playing it on the road – on the Passion global tour, at Catalyst Atlanta and a bunch of other places. Encouraging stuff!

Here’s his videoblog of the song, live from the studio…The chord chart is available here too.

What do you think??

Photos From Disney!

Hi friends,

Here are some photos of my time speaking and singing at Disney World’s “Narnia Day” and of me playing in the Park during the free time!

Most of the people attending were home-schoolers, but we also had parents and Disney staff sitting in…so I tried to make it something they’d all enjoy. We got great feedback, so I felt really encouraged! The kids said C S Lewis came to life as I described him…it was fun to share how much of a hero Lewis is to me, and to show them photos of Oxford and the places that both he and I walked, studied and lived life.

I also took a few hours with John Horton and his family (John works in Marketing at Disney and he masterminded the whole event – great work John!) and we hung out in the park. Check out the photos – we started in the Hollywood Studios area, then later I went to “Epcot” and visited the ‘nations of the world’ including England (with its red telephone box!) and China with incredible huge Chinese buildings. Had great sushi in ‘Japan’, watched the epic firework display over the water, then called it a night!

A friend of mine, Kristina Moller, came to keep me company, pray and take photos. She discovered the amazing technique of highlighting red in a black and white photo! Aren’t they cool? (thanks Kristina, you were an amazing help!)

My favorite moment of the talk was being able to tell the kids how Aslan is one of my favorite pictures of God -His mighty power, roaring at his enemies, then his intimacy and joy, rolling on the grass laughing with the children, then catching them up on his back and flying with them, all smiles and delight. Some of the kids might never have realized that God wants to be close to them; wants to laugh and cry with them. It was a really special moment to get to share God’s character with them through Aslan. I hope their hearts will be stirred to get to know Him better as a result.

This weekend I’m leading worship all four services at church in San Diego. Come if you live nearby!

What are you guys doing this weekend?

Speaking at Disney World…

Hi guys!

Thanks for your comments about your pets! Made me smile to read about them. It’s always fun to get to know you guys better :-)

Next week I am speaking at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. I’m singing a couple of songs too, but most of it will be me speaking about C S Lewis. They are holding a “Narnia Day” centered around the Prine Caspian exhibit they have there. Apparently there’s someone dressed up as Caspian, and some scenes from the movie rebuilt that you can walk around. So watch this space for a photo of me and Prince Caspian!

The day is for HomeSchoolers…so it will be fun to tell them about C S Lewis and what a hero he’s been to me. They also want me to tell stories about my time in Oxford and the different ways that C S Lewis ‘met’ me through the places he used to teach, live and hang out. Fun times!

I am re-reading a few Chronicles of Narnia as preparation for the trip, which is always fun! Aslan is one of my favorite ‘pictures’ of Jesus. I love how well Aslan embodies Jesus’ majesty, grandeur, power and yet his joy, energy, intimacy and deep love for his children. One moment Aslan is roaring in the face of his enemies and the enemy flees terrified at the power of his voice. The next moment he is laughing heartily as he rolls around on the ground play fighting with Lucy and the other children.

Aslan also reveals how powerful Jesus is as our protector. In one scene Lucy is walking with Aslan beside her, but he is invisible. Only Lucy can see him. others think she is walking around alone, but Lucy knows that she has a huge lion standing beside her. In the same way, we walk through life with an invisible God beside us. The world cannot see Him, but we know that He is there – mightier than a lion, protecting us!

Have you guys read much C S lewis? If so, which books or parts did you most enjoy?

Love,

Vicky

Little Dogs Rock….

Hey guys,

So today is my last day in Kansas City… I’m heading back to California. I’ll sure miss this little dog… her name is Gaia and she belongs to my friend Shelley in KC. One of my long term dreams is to have a little dog of my own! But all my flying and travelling wouldn’t really be fair on a dog… so someday when I’m older maybe I’ll get one!

In the meantime, I’ve loved hanging out with Gaia! Shelley and I gave her a bath (which she didn’t enjoy much..here’s a rather ‘pscho dog’ photo as her eyes look a bit scary!)

And one of her afterwards looking extra fluffy and clean!

So… all you pet lovers out there… What kind of pet do you have and why do you love it?

I grew up with 4 black and white cats, in England. My Dad is in charge of locking and unlocking the old 12th Century church two doors down from our house. Each morning and evening as he left the house he would shake the ring of heavy weight old fashioned iron keys and the cats would know it was time for their little walk. They would follow my Dad in order (most dominant charactered cat first) and walk behind him all the way to the church and all the way back! For real! It was such a cute sight :-)

As you can tell I think animals are awesome… And you can tell a lot about people by their pets… so tell me about yours….

Happy 2009!

Vicky

Photos from Washington DC Show!

Hi friends,

Happy new Year! On 29th Dec I led worship at a conference in Washington DC… The venue was at the location above in purple (Crystal City)..

…So you can see how near to the Pentagon we were. I got a photo out the car window as I’d never seen it before….

It was a really cool experience to be so close to where all the Governmental decisions of the US take place…

On a lighter note, after looking at the Pentagon and the site where the plane crashed on 9/11, we went from our hotel to a shopping mall. To get there we walked through a really cool walkway that was fully mirrored with tiles, then led to escalators taking you up to the Mall or the Metro Station. Here are some fun snaps I took down there, and one that the band guys took of me:

What did you do for New Years eve?

Love,

Vicky
