Today I worked on two new songs at my Publisher’s studio…. Excited with the ideas! I’m so grateful that I get to create music about Jesus as my day job!!! : )

Well, its almost midnight and I need to go to sleep so I can wake up and go back to the studio to write again tomorrow! I need my beauty sleep ; )

But here’s a question to get you thinking and commenting…. (drum roll….!):

"If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you take with you?"

(They cant be people, only things!). I want to get to know ‘Y’all" (as they say in Nashville!), so I think you answering that question will give me some more insight into "all y’all"! After you guys have posted your comments, I’ll post my answer and you can see what I’d take on a desert island!

Ok, time to go make my bedtime cup of tea….(you can take the girl out of England, but you can’t take the English-ness out of the girl! haha)

wow… tough…

Well there are a few qualifiers to answer this question correctly. It depends on the desert island and the size limitations. Were there no limitations, and if it is truly a “desert” island, I would take a full water tanker, a truck full of ramen noodles (which every bachelor knows is capable of sustaining life), and a guitar. Food, water, shade, entertainment.

I kind of feel bad about leaving out the Bible, because as a Christian I should want to take it. But one of two things would happen if I was stuck on an island alone. I would become really in tune with God and we’d talk so freely that scripture would be side note. Or I would go crazy and develop multiple personalities and would be so preoccupied with myself I would ignore it. That and it mostly deals with how we relate to others, and we no others, well…

If it’s not a desert island, but a deserted island where I could find food and water naturally I would trade in my water truck for a survival knife (a good one, with all the cool stuff inside the handle), and I’d keep the truck full of ramen and the guitar. (I don’t think I’d be good at actually killing stuff, but I’d feel a lot cooler with a survival knife.)

If there was a realistic size limitation and I really wanted to stay alive I would take the survival knife, a zippo lighter, and a nalgene water bottle.

Now things would change if I was allowed to escape or be rescued… but I think that kind of eliminates that value of the question.

One more thought… I really want to be envious of your blessings in life that allows you to be recording all the time, but I can’t. God just laid on my heart an issue that led to my longest blog ever and I am now prohibited from envying you lest I ignore God’s word.

God can be so wonderfully annoying some times. lol.

Well, numero uno, my Bible, no my King James Study Bible! If I have Jesus what else do I need?
number two, my ipod, but it would have to always be charged, cuz I run my down quite quickly (especially listening to Jeremy Riddle and a certain Ms Beeching). Plus I could sing out loud with my ipod without anyone hearing me! Third, I don’t know, a picture of my family? I’m severely attached to them, so a picture would be nice.

a Bible for sure- to keep me focused on the promises of God’s faithfulness :), a journal to record this experience and thoughts- for i am sure there will be many meditative moments during this time, and last but not least coffee!!!

Linz, do you realize how close to perfect your answer is (minus the I-pod – you really would be able to survive without it)?

Well Miss Beeching, if the 3 things were allowed to include people, then:
1. My wife of almost 30 years, then I wouldn’t be lonely.
2. Bear Grylls, of Discovery Channel’s “Man vs. Wild” fame, former Brit special forces soldier, who can survive anywhere. (Have you seen him? This man will eat anything to survive. Are all Brits like that?)
3. My Workman handtool with multiple blades to include a small handsaw.

The idea behind these three, is that ultimately I want to get off the deserted island, I want my best friend and favorite companion with me until I do, and until we get off the island, we need to survive. Bear always has flint for making fire with him.

If the situation is like Tom Hanks in “Castaway” and it looks like it might take years, or I might never get off the island, and I have to be by myself, then:
1. My bible.
2. My Workman handtool.
3. Flint for making fire.

The thought here with this list is that I can read the bible, the only book that I read over and over all the time, some more, and really think even more deeply about what I read – since I would obviously have even more time for reflection than I do now. Also, I could spear fish with the blades on the handtool, and use the flint to start a fire so I can cook what I catch. Got to eat to survive. One other thing – I could use the saw tool to build a raft or something to get off the island. My family would be the motivation to get off the island. With a little planning and effort, I’d rather take my chances on the open sea and try to get home. Even if I didn’t make it and perished at sea, it would be worth the effort. “To live is Christ. To die is gain.”

When you think about Vicki’s question (good Q because you can be silly or serious about it), as you other readers blog, when you get serious, you have to ask yourselves what you really value most. If it is just three things you can take, it forces you to re-evaluate priorities. Linz, I’d miss my I-pod (yes, this old guy listens to Tobymac when I jog), but I’d get over it, especially on a full stomach of fresh fish. I have a relationship with Christ, whether I have my bible with me or not. My wife, and my grown kids, or in y’all’s case, your significant others, really give definition and add the fullest meaning to our lives. I cannot imagine life anywhere without my family. How about your loved ones? That being said, most would want to do everything possible to survive, to keep alive the hope and chance of getting off the island and being with loved ones again. I know this – I would survive, and try to get off the island, or gladly die trying. So, moving into the totally serious realm, what would you need in order to survive? Not much. I don’t want to over simplify what I’m saying here but consider this true story.

I have a special friend, retired US Air Force Colonel Leo Thorsness, who spent 6 1/2 years as a POW in Vietnam (along with John McCain). He spent that time in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. He didn’t have anything; barely enough food to keep him alive. He was brutally tortured. He has shared with many servicemen and women his incredible testimony. Guess what sustained him those years? Faith in God, love of family, and love of home/country. It got him through some really tough times. A deserted island would be a lot like that minus the torture.

So now as I end this, consider Paul’s letter to the Philippians – probably written around 61-63 A.D. from prison as the apostle awaited trial. Scholars estimate that Paul was martyred around 64 A.D. The entire letter shows Paul’s incredible joy and uncontainable happiness in Christ, even as he faced death. My prayer is that I could be like that on a deserted island. Chapter 1 really shows Paul’s affection for those in this church, whom he loved. Ch. 2 shows a deeply profound understanding of Christ, the One he loved most. Ch. 3 puts his priorities in order (see 3: 7-16) and shows that there is nothing of more value than knowing Christ. Everything else is “garbage.” And Ch. 4: 4-7 pretty well sums it up – the only way to survive, whether you’re in prison or on a deserted island, is in Christ – “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (New Oxford Annotated Bible – RSV)

Hmmm…. You know it’s the kind of question I’ve been asked before but I don’t think I’ve ever actually answered! So here goes.
I think there’s a running theme here and so I’d say my Bible firstly. Why? Well, apart from being food for my soul and God’s Word, I know that I often say “I wish I read my Bible more” or “I wish I had more time too” (though God has given us enough time and it depends how you spend it). Actually, not just read but to actually take in and digest the words. So I figure I’d have no excuse on a desert island!
Secondly, probably something that reminds me of my friends and family. Seeing that we can’t take people I’d have to take something I could hold on too. Perhaps a photo album.
Thirdly, I’d take a camera, to make “visual” journals (not that great with words so I’d prefer to record) and to capture moments I’d want to share with people if I ever got off the island! Two uses in one! I would obviously have to find a way to charge my battery. Solar power perhaps?!
Ok seems like my three items are up. Though I’m slightly worried I’ve not thought about food and water! :D

What fun!

Desertion. Alone.

I don’t think I could take that for very long… though I do love my solitude from time to time. I’m an introvert turned extrovert.

Three things? I almost said a laptop with audio recording capability crammed full of the world’s best literature and lotsa good music to listen to, a solar panel to power it with, and a grand piano.

However, I’m not sure if that’s cheating. You can fit so many things on a laptop, it’s almost like having a whole universe of ideas at your fingertips. Of course, on the island, I probably won’t have Internet access, so that would certainly cramp my style.

Isolation and lots of extra time are two things I don’t have much of these days, and it could be nice for a while. :o)

If I had to pick normal things, I’d have to go with a journal, a pen, and a piano. I’d just hope that it wouldn’t go out of tune too quickly in the tropical climate! I can’t imagine that such weather would be very good for my “baby”… Maybe I could even get a journal that had lots of great scripture at the tops or the bottom of the pages and get two birds with one stone.

Of course, this is all assuming that this island has all of the less important things needed to sustain life such as food, water, and shelter of some sort…

I agree though – an inflatable raft, a tent, or a compass or flares would probably be wise though… so maybe I’d pack all of those things into the insides of the grandpiano!! But i think that’s cheating : )
