Healer Song – part 2: Press Statement

Hi friends,

Greetings from San Diego and a sunny morning here! Just went walking down by the SD harbor downtown. I grabbed an iced Americano and walked past the bay with the boats lined up. One of the marine corps were doing morning training, so they ran past shouting their in-unison training cries.. I’m so glad I’m not a marine! I have SO much respect for those folks and their hardcore training!

Saw this update online about the writer of the song Healer, and seeming as it got so much discussion here on my blog I thought I’d post it for you to see. Sounds like Mike G truly needs our prayers and compassion, as do his family at this tough time.

Look for another blog real soon -this one is just a quick hello, and giving you the Healer update asI thought you’d like to be in the loop as we discussed the song here…

As forgiven sinners we must pray for this couple as they go through this incredibly hard time. My heart just goes out to them.

There are six stages of temptation. It sounds like Mr. G has gone to the last stage of temptation - passion - with his temptation to look at and lust after nude women depicted in pornographic pictures. At the final stage of temptation people have an addiction to a particular sin whether it be lust, greed, anger, gluttony, jealousy, vainglory, or any other sin. The only way anyone can break free from a passion is through much fasting, prayer, using vigilance to guard his thoughts, and confession with a spiritual father. The appetitive aspect of our souls needs to be transfigured. In the case of someone who has a passion to lust, lust must be changed by God's grace into an intense longing for God. One must replace lust for women with a longing for Someone who is more beautiful and more desirable - namely, God.

A chaste man is someone who has driven out bodily love by means of divine love, who has used heavenly fire to quench the fires of the flesh. (The Ladder of Divine Ascent, Step 15: On Chastity, by St. John Climacus)

We should pray for Mr. G, but the truth about the matter is the only thing that will really work in curing him in his case or in anyone else's case who has developed a similar problem is to adopt certain ascetic disciplines such as fasting, prayer (liturgical as well as spontaneous prayer -- also practicing the Jesus prayer), and being accountable to a spiritual father through confession.
Another thing to mention about lust. Many of the spiritual fathers say that gluttony leads to lust. People who have a large appetite for food develop lust. The spiritual fathers also say that gluttony also leads to anger.

What an incredibly sweet statement. It made me want to embrace him (the dad)
  • It must have been difficult for his father to read out that statement.
