Check this out!
Many of us spend LOTS of time sitting at desk and/or in front of computers these days.
The above stats are something to bear in mind. Our bodies weren’t originally designed to sit and stare at screens. So although I LOVE technology I’m aware that my body won’t thank me for it if I don’t take care of it.
Eye strain from looking at screens for too long is something I’ve dealt with. Also RSI (repetitive strain injury) from clicking a mouse or too much touchscreen typing with one finger. I see an osteopath/chiropractor to help my neck and back recover from years of sitting wrongly. He also helps keep my arm tendons healthy too, to stop the RSI coming back. So all this laptop-geekiness takes a toll!
A month or so ago, as a result of becoming aware of how much I’m sitting down, I started learning how to run. I NEVER thought I’d get into running!!!
The app I’m using (recommended by my friends Bex and Sarah) is called “Get Running”. Many of you have asked about the app (which I’ll make clear – I am not get paid to promote!!).
When using it you see these screens which tell you when to walk and when to run. To begin with you only run in bursts of 1 – 1.5 minutes. You can listen to music and the lady’s voice speaks over the top of it to tell you what to do. I think it’s fantastic!
Here is what the app looks like in the app store as there are a lot of running apps:
I’ll blog a bit more about running soon, but if I can do it ANYONE CAN! It feels like a good step towards protecting my body, as I do sit at a laptop for countless hours every day.
It is time consuming and that is what makes it difficult for many people to exercise. But I think our lives depend on it more than we realise…so perhaps it’s something we should really try and prioritise.
How about you?
- Do you sit down for most of your working day? Do you balance this with exercise?
- Are there people you know and love who might need to read the above statistics and think about making some lifestyle changes?
- Have you ever considered whether the technology you use is having a damaging effect on your body?
- Could you start to walk, jog, run, join a gym etc? What’s stopping you? (P.s. I know many people have genuine and insurmountable reasons why they can’t…so I know that :-) Just trying to encourage those can to get going!)
- What reminders could be set every hour, to help you to get up and take a break from sitting?
