Speaking Out About Justice

My last post was on Martin Luther King. Here’s me standing next to another figure who stood for justice…. I saw this statue in London, last time I was home in July. Inspiring!

I’ve never read his autobiography – anyone read it? Should I?

I’m excited about the “Hope For Justice” event in Derby, England next week! I’ll be speaking there about the relationship between Worship and Justice, as well as leading morning and evening musical worship sets.

I’ve started speaking a lot more recently… Leading worship will always be my calling, but I also love getting the chance to say more than will fit into a song or musical set. So all this talk about Justice is firing me up to pick up the microphone to say yes to more speaking more! Whether it’s on small stages or big…live or on TV…I am committed to being a voice for the voiceless. How about you?

Hey, great you want to speak more, it is one of the things I love to do as well next to singing. I was triggered though by the 'voice to the voiceless' quote coz I recently read "Irresistible Revolution" by Shane Claiborne. At some point his churchmembers were announced to be that when they went up to speak somewhere. Shane said: "Something inside me hurt and I gently corrected them. Everyone has a voice. [...] Perhaps we are too quick to assume folks cannot speak for themselves."

If you read the book of Nelson (do it! :) you can read it online if you want to, it's free! http://books.google.com/books?id=beRL3schM0kC&l... ) you can see that Nelson, along with others were a catalyst in a proces that encouraged those that dared not to speak up to stand and speak up against injustice. It often takes someone to make others realize they do have a voice. And that means being with them, living with those that keep their voice silent. Like Jesus did when he came to earth. Not staying in heaven to be the voice to the voiceless but joining us here to make us realize we are the ones that need to speak up and stand tall. To become one with those that dare not to speak up.

That is why in my line of work I want to be with the teenagers and encourage them to be speakers. To ask questions about life, injustice, church etc...

I look for opportunities to speak when either with small group of friends or a single person about social justice.
