Learning To Take Photographs…

Hey Blog crew!

How’s your week going?

Well… I am getting into a new hobby…. learning how to take photos! I’m pretty stoked about it… so I’m in the process of getting a better camera and wanting to learn Photoshop too…fun times.

Here are a few pics I took in Canada using my cheap point and shoot. I’m trying to figure out what makes a good angle, and what makes good lighting…

As you can see I have LOTS to learn, but I thought I’d share a few pics of “before” I get the good camera and learn some editing tricks… then I’ll post some “after” shots in a week or two, and hopefully you’ll see some progress in my skills!

Thanks to Daley for not minding me snapping pics while he played this grand piano in Victoria BC, Canada… These shots remind me of what a fun tour we all had out there.

In half an hour I fly to Ohio to lead worship at a girl’s conference. I’m traveling all day – leaving San Diego at 10.40am and landing into OH at 8.30pm so I’ll have lots of time to read, pray and think. I love days like this – wide open for contemplation, soaring miles above the earth on a plane….

Anyway, back to photography, I think I’m excited about the concept of it because ‘a picture says more than a thousand words’ (or whatever that old saying is!) I see so many things during my travels, and I’d love to be able to document them. Especially when I travel to the third world and see a lot of challenging sights, like I have in Africa, Mexico and Peru… I wish I’d been able to snap them and keep them to show others.

So partly it feels like a fun new past-time, and partly it feels like a responsibility – that because I get to travel and get to see so much, I have a responsibility to learn how to capture those experiences and share them with others.

Here’s one more shot I took… trying to get a cool reflection…

Anyway, that’s enough from me rambling about my new photography hobby!

Anyone else got any interesting hobbies? I know there are other photographers out there…. Any bungee jumpers, or videographers or surfers or knitters??! Tell us about what you do to relax….

Love,

Vicky

  • I love the photos....photography is amazing, I love it! When you get to grips with photoshop you will love it! You should definitely try out analogue photography too, and developing your own film. I developed a roll of black and white film recently and it was awesome!

Anyway, stay blessed, i'm stoked that I found that you keep a blog and i've also added you on twitter.

    Peace

I think your photographs are fantastic! Keep it up and remember to share with your loyal blog-followers :)

    Blessings to you!
  • I love photography... but have never really invested time into learning about it or money into a good camera... i do love the story photos tell.... at home just this past month I literally sat for hours looking through possibly thousands of photos I've taken in the past 15 years! The memories... the friends... the good times... scared that the photos I've digitally taken may never actually make it to print... that's why one day I wanna make one of those books... http://www.blurb.com. They print up like a real book! How cool would that be to have on your coffee table!
Anyway... see you tomorrow sometime... someplace in London!
  • Thanks for sharing your pics - you've got a great eye - with practice and good equipment, you'll be turning out top-notch photos in no time!

Life's been very busy during the past month, but it's been fun to take a couple minutes this morning to catch up a little on what you've been writing here on your blog. I did get a chance to jump off the tallest building in the southern hemisphere (in Auckland) a couple times last week and - though not exactly bungee jumping - it was lots of fun. I think it'd also be really sweet to go for some hang gliding and parachuting etc when I get the chance. As to surfing, I got pounded into the sand by the waves in Sydney, but didn't have a surfboard (and wouldn't know how to use one anyway), so it was body surfing only. :o)

Ok, I've gotta run to work. I'm in Chennai, India right now, and am up close and personal with some of those "challenging sites" you mention above. Working with the wonderful Indian people at HCL Technologies, and it's been incredible.

I show horses professionally. I travel across the southern half of the united states, and have been awarded seventh in world before.
It is like a relaxer for me to travel and get away from the norm. My addiction is guitar. I
started 1 1/2 years ago, and got hooked!
I have to get my fix everyday (literally)!!!
I have a line up of addictions:
    1) GOD,
    2) guitar,
    3) church/fellowship/fulfilling my calling, and
    4) horses.
God has always been and always will be my number 1 addiction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I have many hobbies. I enjoy anything creative though. I guess knitting is at the top right now, but I also love to do photography, scrapbook, make digital graphics/art and write.

I think you have quite an eye for photograhy. I'm sure you'll do well and I look forward to seeing your progress.

  • hobbies and other nifty things.. first i love people who love taking photos.. its all about passion and drive.. to go and go and take and take.. even if you have odd looking people and bad lighting. when we found ourselves with a parking lot and a mall.. we snapped up a walmart shopping cart and turned that into a photo shoot.
my secrets that i tell few.. i like trixie belden books (circa 1948-early 1960's). but the ones i really enjoy: i love 80s cartoons, brit boy bands from the 90s.. and fun 80s bands that i loved in the 90s (depeche mode, inxs, duran duran). i actually like taking photos of shoes.. and guitars :)

My hobbie is quilting. I started about 3 years ago and I am hooked. My mom and sister also quilt, so it is fun to get together and just spend the day sewing and talking. I was at my mom's today, and I am affraid I did more talking than sewing, oh well.

Nice pics - who needs a decent camera? You just need a decent eye for an image! :-) Mind you, a decent camera can help get you photos you maybe otherwise couldn't capture.

Always handy to carry a small compact one with you though to capture at all times (or decent camera phone I guess) when you haven't lugged your SLR out.
  • Great pictures Vicky, I'll be looking out for your shots with your new DSLR! (get a flickr-account, they're pretty handy)
  • Hey Vicky,

I've pretty much stuck to guitar, writing and reading. Great hobbies but, as of late, they have made me into quite a boring person! :-)

I've tried the photography bit, but its not for me. I can take good pictures by accident, but if I try, it's just not gonna happen.

I would love to get into a place where I could be involved in sports (I live in an extremely small community). Hopefully that will be coming soon enough! Then more things to fill my time with. Is that good or bad? Hmmmmmm....

Hope you enjoy snapping those photos!

    Keep pressing in!
  • super nice shots... I love the composition and lighting, amazing they were taken with a P&S. Can't wait to see what else you get, you seem to have a great eye.
  • nice shots. you have a great instructor. daley will learn you well :)

you ever going to play in atlanta? sure would love you see you!
  • Surfing! You should try surfing Vicky! Go out to trestles beach in San Diego!
  • Vicki!

My favourite hobby is collecting autographs (mostly through the mail some in person). I basically send sport cards to be signed to athletes in four major North America sports (Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey). Suprisingly, I have received a lot higher success rate than I expected.

  • Remixing is my hobby. Unless I get paid. So is playing keyboards... :P
