Why do I write music?

Writing songs was never something I purposefully set out to do. It just ‘happened’ during my early teens, when I wanted to express myself through the piano or guitar. Bit by bit songs started to flow out until I had pages and pages of notebooks filled with ideas.

My values in songwriting have always been authenticity and depth – I think songs should say something meaningful. Something that needs saying. There are too many songs in the universe to just write trivialities and cliches. So I hope all my song convey something meaningful. There are tons that never made it on to an album for that very reason as I set myself a high bar and throw most of my work away!

The more I began to write songs for Churches to sing, the more passionate I became about having accurate and deeo theology in the lyrics. So now one of my main values in songwriting is to get deep theology into contemporary worship songs. I think this really matters!

If you are new to my music, I’d suggest you start by listening to “The Wonder Of The Cross” from my “Painting The Invisible” album as it encapsulates what I’m trying to do in conveying theology. Or my contemporary version of the hymn “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” with a new ‘B section’ that I added.
