Photoshoot – Behind The Scenes!

Hello there :-)

Just to re-enforce that my life is an open book and you get to see pretty much ALL of it.. here’s me in the salon, getting my hair teased into GIANT proportions before it got pinned up for the shoot!!! Err…yes that’s chewing gum in my mouth (sorry that’s a bit gross!) and no Sarah isn’t smoking behind me, she’s just got a sucker in her mouth!

Then we drove to LA and shot photos in a park with this sign at the entrance:

But we survived the dangerous beasts and reptiles!

Here is Sarah MacIntosh, my very-stylish-stylist! She was fixing my outfit and I was grabbing the chance to twitter (I am an addict!!)

This a shot Daley snapped at the end of the day…. me, Sarah and Sam Noerr from my record label, Integrity Music.

Looking forward to showing you the new photos sometime soon… watch this space for the new EP in a couple months…the cover will be from this day of shooting!

Question for you – do you think worship leader album covers should be serious and posed or more natural?… should the person be smiling? does it make a difference in helping you connect with them and the music?

I honestly think that the album cover picture depends on the mood of the album. I love smiling, natural poses but if the album was written during a time of struggling the photo on the front could depict that. Can't wait for thee new CD!

serious or smiling, either/or. personally, i'd probably go for a more simplistic, natural, effortless look on the album cover. can't wait to see what you end up doing! love&blessings

The photo shoot pics rock! worship leader album cover pose artistic perspective should express the mood/theme message that your addressing.

Personally, i find it contradictory when Christian bands have totally serious photos on the cd cover. The guys on the front look completely stuffed with life so it then makes no sence to me when I put on the cd and they're singing about an awesome, amazing Hope. I like the happy snaps – smiling's the way to go! :-) :-)

Although I value tremendously the wonderful contribution that many worship leaders and song writers make to the body of Christ, I would much prefer it myself if “worship leaders” did not appear on album covers at all. For me, it puts the focus on the worship leader and not the person the worship leader is trying to help us worship and follow. We want to worship Christ and not the musician. I am sorry to say that I am left with a bad taste in my mouth when I hear about “photo shoots” for album covers or worship music.

I understand that many will disagree with me – peace be with you whether you do or don't!

Interesting question, Vicky!
I'll have to agree with Simon's post.
You are the worship tool – an instrument – in bringing others into a place of worship (what an awesome calling you have!). There should be no distractions from the worship (although I love seeing photos of your unique style on your website!).
What images can you put on your album that make YOU think of worship? Perhaps that's what a worship leader should have printed on album covers/inserts in lieu of photos of themselves.

I like the pics on your first couple albums. Looking forward to seeing what photos you captured for the EP. In my opinion, a good picture of a person usually helps you see a part of their personality – to get to know them a little better. And because God made us all different ways so that we can worship Him – each in our own unique ways, I can't think of any reason that worship album covers should be any exception!

What do you think? :)

I wrote the above and then before posting, read the comments preceding mine. I don't typically like to express contrary thoughts (though I do often like to pose as the devil's advocate). But the truth is, the following are just my own contrary thoughts… :)

For the reason I expressed above about God creating us for unique expressions of worship, I do think that we can go too far in trying to deflect *all* attention to God. Isn't that often motivated by fear that we're going to go overboard in the other direction? I think He takes delight in us, and we ought to take delight in each other.

Please don't think I'm trying to pick on Simon or SMM777. Their sweet spirits are clearly evident in the few words they've shared. Just thought it'd be good to put one more point of view out there. :)

Hello again. Please don't get me wrong – I am not trying to dig at Vicky or anyone specifically – I knew her well enough many years ago to know that she went into worship leading to lead people to God and with the best of intentions, but in response to Jonathan Paul, isn't that exactly what we are trying to do as worship leaders – trying to deflect *all* attention to God? Along the lines of John the Baptist – he must increase and we must decrease.

If we are not trying to do that, then surely it means that part of us is using our position as a worship leader to do something other than lead people to worship God? We may end up making money and becoming famous while leading worship – but surely this isn't our intention?

I lead worship in a more traditional setting where the congregation is used to those leading worship wearing cassocks or albs – so I wear them too – not because I necessarily think that they are a good idea, but because I know that if I don't then the focus will be on me and not on God.

What do you think?

Serious and posed album covers make me feel uncomfortable cause it's unrealistic, that's not how that person is in real life. So, I definitely like a natural pic.

I always read the other comments before I place mine and while reading, I had to smile and couldn't help thinking: I didn't know there are people who listen to music with the album cover in their hands and staring at the pic while listening and singing along…;)

But all joking apart, to be honest, I've never really thought about this. All I think when I see an album cover is: nice photo or hm, not very natural and then I start listening while doing house cleaning or something. But Vicky, I have to say that I like the covers on your albums though, first things that came into mind was 'nice girl' (or should I say woman;) 'modest' and 'natural look', unlike a lot of covers of non-christian singers which scream 'here I am, don't I look fantastic?'

Besides, when there's a new album, searching that particular face is how I find the album. Haha, maybe I should ask the store to put the stickers with the name of the artist on top instead of at the bottom of the album:)
No, seriously, why is it okay for other christian artists to have their face on the cover and not okay for worship leaders?

I don't like it when worship leaders actively attract attention to themselves. On the other hand, I don't think we have to be afraid about getting attention. Preferably, we'd get minimal attention while deflecting as much attention to God as possible. Chances are though that they'll still know that we're in the room. ;o) If I could figure out a way to lead worship and not get any of the attention in the room, believe me, I'd love to do that!
