O How We Love Music Gear!

Hey blog-friends!

How is your week going? I can’t believe it’s Thursday already… the weekend is almost here. Seems like I just stepped off the plane from Canada, and its almost time to hit the road again this weekend. Saturday I’m playing in Chattanooga, TN. It’s called “J-Fest” so come out if you live nearby!

Since getting home from Canada I’ve been spending a lot of time working on my pedal board and getting some new stuff from my mate Adam at Guitar Center to improve it… Its been an “I love music gear!” kind of week!

I love finding out what equipment other people are using and loving… Here are a few (bad!) photos of the things I’ve been loving using recently….

Yesterday you got to meet my friend Biscuet from China through his videos… Today you get to meet another friend who’s blog you should consider reading – Mr Daley Hake, who is a killer guitar player….so talking about gear here, it’s only right to give him a shout out as I’ve heard recordings of him playing and his tones are brilliant – I want to sound as good as him when I grow up!! Yesterday he posted about his guitar rig on his blog, so go check it out here to see his set up….

And this is him…(just so you can see his rock ‘n roll hair…just kidding!) so you can find out about his long hours in the studio working on his new band “Telegram” and also his passion for Uganda and missions…

I’ve asked you guys this question before, but it’s a fun one to ask regularly…

“Does anyone have any new recommendations on music gear?”

Anyone out there found any new cool pedals, or amp settings, or keyboard sounds lately? I am going to try out some Nord keyboards tomorrow so see what the sounds are like… and also trying out a few alternatives to the Fullton Fulldrive 2 to see if any other pedals give a warmer clean sound… My friend Leeland Mooring from the band “Leeland” said I should buy the “Klon Centaur” so I’ll try it out.. its a boutique boost pedal…. I used his the other day and it sounded great!

Peace out,

vb

  • Shoot, forgot to mention the two other pieces of gear I am looking into right now...

The X2 XDR-95 Wireless Guitar system, digital and doesn't have issues with the new FCC requirements.

I am thinking of upgrading from my Boss TU-12 to a Peterson Stroberack.

Anyone else using any of these?
  • Well this week the latest piece of gear I am checking out is a Plek. Have you heard of that? There are only 10 places in the US that actually have a PLEK (the cost like $100K+). My guitar tech in SF has one and is putting my guitar through it as we speak / type / whatever. It is supposed to be 100 times more accurate than a luthier when it comes to milling your frets and should give you a result of a guitar that stays in tune all the way up the neck! I shall let you know who it goes. Oh, let me know Vicky if you and your guitarists want to visit www.brawer.com when you come to SF in September! Gary is the guitar tech we bring down to all our shows. He has been guitar tech for Santana, Satriani, Lincoln Brewster and ME! :-)
  • I would recommend stulce amps www.stulceamps.com Charlie Hall's guitar player Kendel Combes built mine for me, it is an excellent amp. Its only 10 watts, all tube, two gain knobs, and it sounds great with my fulldrive.

For overdrive pedals, I really like the robert keeley Blues driver, sparkle drive, and the Barber direct drive

    Hey Vicky,
Congrats! You now have GAS! That stands for
Gear Acquisition Syndrome, or Guitar Acquisition
    Syndrome--depends on what you're buying.
Thanks so much for all your hard work and I
    love your music.
    Yours in Christ
    Robin
  • Hey Vicky,

One of the best amps that just came out is the Suhr Badger 30. A couple of guys on our team love them. They keep their tone at any volume where others lose at low volumes.

  • I don't know if you are into saxophones but last year I gave my brother this as a present:

A really great instrument to have in a band setting or if you are on the road and don't have enough space for a real sax...
  • best clea boost pedal i've tried is the new (red) version of the fulltone fat boost. i personally am not a big fan of the Fulldrive (i keep coming back to the good old ts-9) but the fat boost is great for those thick, punchy, cleanish U2 tones, and it makes a great solo boost too. plus it's about half the price of the Klon, i think.
  • your fulldrive is set a little goofy (in the picture at least). I wouldnt give up on it to quick. It all depends on what amp you are using though. That specific model Fulldrive, with the FM switch, was made with an AC30 in mind. If youjust dont dig the fulldrive - there is a pedal called the TIM. They used to make one that was acopy of teh fulldrive2...just better tones. I try not to get too deep into botique land. But it's a hot pedal...just hard to find. I had one when i was 16. have only seen a couple since then.
    ...we will chat about it.
  • I just picked up a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive. pretty cool alternative to the fulldrive i'm guessing... and I am loving the new DD7 (Boss)...
