Please pray for the Chapman family…

Friends,

Please be praying for the Chapman family, after the tragedy that took place this evening (Wednesday). Here is the write up from the Tennessean. Prayer is a powerful thing, so let’s really lift them up to God and ask for His presence, grace and power to surround them right now.

Love,

Vicky

Steven Curtis Chapman’s daughter killed by car in driveway

Steven Curtis Chapman’s youngest child died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a car driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the family’s Williamson County home.

Maria, one of the Christian singer’s six children, was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Hospital, which confirmed the death, according to Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The 5-year-old was hit by an SUV driven by her teenage brother, she said. Police did not give the driver’s name.

The teen was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser down the driveway of the rural home at about 5:30 p.m. and several children were playing in the area, McPherson said. He did not see Maria in the driveway before the vehicle struck her, she said.

“It appears to be a terrible accident,’’ McPherson said.

No charges are expected, she said. The accident was witnessed by two other children; the entire family was home at the time, McPherson said.

Singer/songwriter Chapman, who recently was inducted into Music City Walk of Fame, is one of contemporary Christian music’s most recognizable and most awarded names.

He and his wife Mary Beth have long been supporters of international adoption, having brought three girls from China into their family. Maria was the youngest.
The couple is so active in the cause that they formed an organization, Shaohannah’s Hope, to aid families wanting to adopt.

With his latest music tour, which came through Nashville in November, Chapman started a campaign called “Change for Orphans”. He asked audience members at each stop to bring spare change to the concert, where it was counted and given to a local family to aid in their adoption process.

“I don’t know of anybody who loves his children more than he does and is so committed to the adoption concept, and to lose one, no matter what the circumstances, is heartbreaking beyond all comprehension,” said John Styll, president of the Nashville-based Gospel Music Association.

“He talks about his kids all the time. That’s his life. His kids are more important to him than music, that’s for sure.”

The tragedy was announced during Wednesday-night services at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ, which the family attends. Maria had just graduated from the church preschool.

And word spread throughout the tight-knit Christian music community on Wednesday evening.

Styll got the news not long after Maria’s death.

“I’m confident I can speak for everyone in the community to say we will do everything we can to support this family, as we would do at any time, but especially at a time like this,” he said.

Most of the Chapman family was at Vanderbilt children’s hospital after the accident and could not be contacted. The long, gravel driveway leading to the home west of Franklin was blocked off by Williamson County sheriff’s deputies.

It's terrible news. Thank you for sharing, we'll be praying.

    Martin, I'm so sorry :(
  • I couldn't finish watching the Cinderella video. I saw Steven play this song at the opening night of the tour last year, and thinking of him and his family missing their little girl... it's awful to even think about! I'll continue praying for supernatural peace and comfort for all of the Chapman family.

Vicky, My wife told me about the accident when I got in last night from work. My heart goes out to the Chapman family. I had heard your song "Great is your glory" on the way home from work on the radio, and was showing my daughter the song on You Tube when my wife told me about the Chapmans daughter, it just broke my heart. I just want you to know that your song is my favorite song to listen to. May our Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless you as you folllow him. I hope that you will be in the Dallas,Tx. area soon and I can bring my family to see you in worship. Praying for you and your family, and the Chapmans in their time of heartache.
    God Bless

Hi Vicky, I wanted to take the time to thank you for your musical input last weekend in Buffalo for the Worship Conference. I sat in on your session not knowing what I was in for. But I was amazed at what you said and how you encouraged me (and all who attended). I was the lady who shared about the vision from Friday morning. I am still amazed how God will get our attention. Sat. nights concert was awesome and your music was great. I purchased a ticket so my 17 yr old daughter Sarah (she is on youth worship team at church) could hear you and Paul Baloche. You inspired me to pick up a harmonica also and learn something different than my guitar. Thank you for your heart sharing about England and your family. As a parent I know the heart of a parent when their child decides to move away. You are loved by the King and He will protect and guide you as you are away from family. Thank you Vicky,
    In Christs Love, Karen

My husband woke me up with the news this morning. I've been praying for the entire family. I don't think there is a greater pain on this earth than the death of a child. May God wrap His arms around the Chapman family, and bring them comfort in the storm.
  • How awful for the family and the brother. Poor kid, I hope he gets the support he needs, all of them need actually. I'll be praying.

on a side note, and feeling guilty for mentioning it in such a sad post, Vicky did you know that your blog opens a print dialog box in IE when it's visited? It only started this morning.
  • Terrible news, reminds me of seeing my own brother die at the same age by a similar accident. I pray for the family and specifically the brother.
