RECORDING! Behind-the-scenes video #1

Video Blog #1 From The Studio! from Vicky Beeching on Vimeo.

Hey!

So you’ve heard me talk on Twitter and this Blog about recording my new album. So I thought it was high time you SAW and experienced it for yourselves!

Check out this video I made – you’ll get a guided tour of the studio rooms and gear. Then you’ll get to meet my producer, one of my favorite co-writers, my A&R man Jay King, plus baby Scarlett – who makes us all smile everyday!

Question for you – have you done any recording? How did it go and what software/hardware did you use? Or are you someone wanting to know where to start in making a decent demo? Lets chat about recording…all questions and thoughts welcome below!

Thanks for your support and prayers – I couldn’t make this record without you and I hope all of the songs will lead you closer to Jesus!

Love,

Vicky

I just recorded my EP at the Playroom in Wylie, TX and Bedington Lane studios in Keller, TX. Chris Clayton did an amazing job engineering, producing, and mixing. We used pro-tools and a whole bunch of gear that I don't remember. Divided By 13 amp made most of the rock sounds. Stulce amps showed up with a nice british rock tone thanks to a nice Japanese tele, a 335, a chopped up mexiCAN strat, a lucille and les paul. Manley Pres, rosetta converters, joe meek, and so much other stuff. OH! Johnny Rocket pres sound KILLER. THe guy who owns the Playroom and another guy makes them. Joel Cameron and Jon Meyer.
You can find my new EP on itunes, but if you're lucky enough to be on here and want some free music, I'd love to know what you think. Jesus Loving music, you know? FREE Jesus loving music. Love Ms. Beeching's stuff and can't wait to get the new songs and start using them live.

    Hey Vicky!
I have a question about recording, what would be a really good mic or two for recording acoustic guitar? And I don't mean regular strumming type stuff, I play fingerstyle with lots of picking and whacking harmonics and banging on the guitar body and hammering/pulling off etc. I've got about 12 or 13 tracks I want to record, half on acoustic and half on classical, and I'm thinking probably two mics, one near the nut and the other near the neck base would work but there are so many different ones to choose from! I know two people with small studios and but they don't have the right type of mics. I'm also trying to put a small studio together at home. Any suggestions would be awesome :)
Also, what's your favorite vocal mic you've recorded with?

Oh and the song in the background on your video was so pretty! What is that from?

Keep up the wonderful worship tunes :)

  • Great video!!

My worship team is in the process of recording our first studio album. Should be out by the end of the year. We've run into some roadblocks, but we're pressing on. Basically we're using ProTools for the recording, and we'll probably have it professionally mastered.

    Looking forward to your record!
  • Hey Vicky...enjoyed the video so much I put it on my blog. Looking forward to the next one and the album. Great meeting you at the conference.

  • Cool video. Incredible guitars just, around. Excited to hear the new record and hear about what God has been laying on your heart. So... the next video blog has to include an audio clip! Yeah?
  • Love the video; great job on that, and thanks for sharing the experience with us! (And you crack me up... guy moment! Hahaha.)

As to recording, I've been focusing on the writing lately - doesn't matter what great gear you've got, if you haven't got a good song to lay down on it, none of the rest matters. Rich Mullins laid down the foundation for a great record (The Jesus Record) with a crummy tape recorder and an old beat up piano.

Of course there's the other side of the argument that great gear can inspire you, and there's some truth there as well. I've just found all the rest of the stuff a bit distracting lately. So lately I've been working with just my CP33 and a Zoom H2. I've got my eye on some songwriting software that comes with some pretty high recommendations though... :o)

I do feel very heartened though that my recording computer has finally seemed to pull itself together and start working smoothly (just this last week - for the first time in the close to two years I've been in Seattle). I've got ProTools 8 as well as Sonar running on a Dell Precision workstation with 8 processors and 10 gigs of RAM and a few SAS 15K RPM drives. Can anybody say "overkill?" I guess I'm all set for video work if I wanted to do a bit of that - though I'd prefer working in Final Cut... And actually it's been nice for some of the soft synths I run. Ivory, Komplete 5, Emu Proteus Pack, Structure, Rapture, Dimension Pro...

I have recorded using Proteus, ProTools, Audacity, Behringer mini-mixer, and my helpful casio keyboard, not the best but has helped me create some descent tunes. A few years ago I used Nero but didn't really liked it.

there are pictures on my myspace page on what i use at home. not the best but a start.
