Technology….Remembering Its Wonder!

Hey friends!

Sorry for a week or so without any Blog entries…. after I got home from the UK, after an amazing time at The Stand event, I got flu! So that’s my excuse for not writing for a while!

Today I was catching up on reading my friends Blogs, so I jumped on Biscuet.com. He had written a story about our mutual friend Stephen Proctor. Stephen is in the middle of Nowhere right now, working with a tribe and shooting a documentary.

Check out this amazing story… it reminded me how amazing technology truly is, and how I can take it for granted so easily… Check out the wid-eyed response of these tribal folks, when they saw Stephen using iChat.

Here’s Biscuet’s account:

“Today i was at home between my classes checking email and resting up after four straight hours of teaching. Out of nowhere i get a call on my computer from my friend Stephen. Stephen is in Indonesia. He’s doing some filming for a project that i don’t have many details on. Instead of botching the details, i’ll just leave it at that.

So Stephen calls and says, “Guess what.”

“What,” I say.

“I’m sitting on a porch in the middle of the jungle with about 40 tribal men gathered around listening to your voice on my computer.”

“WHAT??!!” I say again, but much more enthusiastically than the first.

“That’s right,” Stephen tells me, “Say ‘Aba.’”

Hesitantly, i slowly say, “Aba.”

Then, out of nowhere i start hearing a bunch of voices shouting back at me, “Aba aba aba aba aba!”

This means “hello” in their tribal language. This was incredible. What a cool opportunity. Here i am in Beijing, China talking to a tribe in the-middle-of-nowhere, Indonesia. Most of the guys i was talking to have no concept of the outside world. I’m serious, these are the kind of tribes that you see on the Travel Channel. It was nuts!

After a few minutes of talking to Stephen he encouraged the whole tribe to sing one of their tribal songs for me. Are you kidding me? Is this really happening? I started scrambling for some sort of way to record what was going on, but i came up empty.

After a few more songs and some more small talk with Stephen we decided to cut it off. As we were saying bye i think the tribe guys figured it out because i started hearing all of these guys start shouting, “Aba aba aba aba aba aba.” I guess that means goodbye in their language too. So, while they are shouting, “Aba” at me of course i am sitting here on my computer shouting it back at them. It was unforgettable to say the least.

I just hope the Chinese guy that lives next door to me couldn’t hear me through the wall. They already think the foreigners are weird enough. The last thing they need to hear is a foreigner shouting, “Aba aba aba aba!!”

So there is it! That story totally inspired me today….. You can check out Stephen’s travels at:

A Video Chat with Biscuet from Biscuet.com!

Biscuet.com Video Podcast. June 18, 2008 from Jonathan Smyth on Vimeo.

Hi there!

Sometimes people say to me “why do you spend so much time on your laptop? It’s antisocial!!”. My belief is that my online community is just as real and important to me as my face to face community. Online I am linked in with friends across the globe – England, all over the USA, Denmark, South Africa…and even China!  The great part is that from time to time, you cross paths with people from the online community and get to hang out face to face.

My friend Biscuet (that’s a nickname he got given in elementary school as he mispelled the word ‘biscuit’ in a spelling bee!) built my www.vickybeeching.com Blogsite from Beijing China, where he lives and teaches English as a foreign language.

The time difference from the USA to China is 13 hours so we would discuss Blog ideas on iChat, then I’d go to sleep in Nashville and meanwhile he’d be working on the Blog throughout his day/my night, over in Beijing. Then when I woke up in Nashville, he’d be finished with his work day in China and have a ton of cool stuff done for me to look at. It was hilarious to think we were working together on creating a website, but doing it SO many miles apart! Teachnology is amazing!

He’s originally from Alabama, and is spending his summer back in the States. His travels took him to Southen California, so we hung out today and I asked him a few questions on video. I couldn’t get my iMovie software to work tonight, so this video isn’t edited…so forgive its messiness and the fact that some of it is upside down! I also included a video below that one of him at a Chinese banquet – eating TURTLE! So these are the things you get to see on his blog!..

Check out his Blog www.biscuet.com especially in a few weeks time when he heads back to China and starts posting videos and photos of Chinese life and culture… I point you to his blog because I have a huge heart for China, and through his posts you can see what life there is like. One of my dreams has always been to visit China, so perhaps in 2009 I will!

We’ve all had our eyes on China for the Olympics, but I’m deeply hoping that we won’t forget about that amazing nation just because the Olympics are over… so I am wanting to keep China on our radar!

If you are one of my blog readers, why don’t you jump over to his page and just leave him a comment that says hello?

Hey friends!

Hows your week going? Thanks for all the good feedback about the videos I posted.. my iMovie skills will continue to develop and grow, and I’m excited to document more ‘life on the road’ footage!

Today was an exciting day – it might not mean much to anyone except fellow tech-geeks out there (!!) but today my Blog was re-installed to http://vickybeeching.com rather than http://vickybeeching.com/blog/wordpress. Hooray!

If you wouldn’t mind, if you link to me on your Blogroll or website, please erase any old links like http://vickybeeching.com/blog/wordpress or http://vickybeeching.typepad.com and make the link exactly this…

http://vickybeeching.com

Thanks so much! it makes a real difference in enabling people to find my site, and for stats and ratings etc… Muchas Gracias!!

Ok, so I know I’ve thanked him before but you need to know that the guy who designed my new site also worked hard today from across the globe in China, to re-install it to the new address. His name is BIscuet (just a nickname – his real name is Jonathan…he said he mispelled “biscuit” in a spelling bee when he was a kid…mispelling it as “biscuet” so the nickname has stuck ever since!)

You can get to know him a bit in the 2 videos above… Check out his site too: http://www.biscuet.com Thankyou SO much Biscuet for all your help with this site! Thank you also to A J Rhodes, who works in the IT department at my record label EMI. AJ, we couldn’t have done this site without you!

Well, I’ve had a great week..was just downloading photos from my camera and thought I’d share a few with you from my recent adventures:

Buffalo, NY

My re-built pedal board…

YC Alberta, Canada…

YC Canada…

This weekend, I’m headed to a festival called “J-Fest” in Chattanooga… should be a great time. I was on iChat with my friend Steve Fee earlier, and he said his band Fee will be playing there too… So is Matthew West and a bunch of others. Looking forward to using my newly set up pedal board there and having a good time!

Ok… gotta go write some more songs!

Question for you – Earlier I was chatting with new friend Daley (check out his blog @ http://www.daleyhake.com/blog) We both agreed we are total geeks! So “Are you a self-confessed Geek?” I totally am… guitar pedals, amps, Mac laptop, iPhone, Twitter, Blogging… loving learning iMovie and learning all about Web Hosting and WordPress… “Are you?” If so, tell me about it!

love,

Vicky
