Discussing theology on social media is vitally important!

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears….”

This well known quote is from Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar, Act 3 Scene 2. The setting of this famous speech? The Roman forum.

Built in the 2nd century AD, the Forum was the hub of Roman life and the place where much public speaking and debate took place.

This tradition existed long before the Romans adopted it. 2,500 years ago in ancient Greee, the ‘Agora’ or marketplace in Athens was one of the first examples of a deeply democratic government that allowed public speaking and debate. So it’s an old tradition and one that ran deep in both Greek and Roman culture.

So where do we do much of our business, buying and selling, sharing of ideas and debating now? Online. The ‘net with all its social media is the Roman Forum, or the Greek Agora, of today. It’s meant to be a place where we discuss things that matter.  Read the rest of this entry »

Through what lens do you view the Bible?

Rayban glasses are everywhere this summer. Lots of people are seeing the world through Rayban lenses, as they put them on and walk around, enjoying the sunshine.

In a similar way, we all see the world through a ‘lens’ – this is shaped by where we live, our family background, this point in time and history, and the things we surround ourselves with.

Very little we see is really free from this ‘lens’, even though we THINK we view the world objectively (without any bias or colour).

Surely one of the most visible lessons taught by the twentieth century has been the existence, not so much of a number of different realities, but of a number of different lenses with which to see the same reality -

“Worship” – What On Earth Do We Call It?

“Worship” is such a time-worn and easy term to describing the act of singing to God. But it’s also quite misleading, and maybe not the best choice…

Does it imply that we are only worshiping WHEN we sing?

What about when we aren’t singing? Isn’t that worship too? (Yes – Romans 12)

But we all know and use the phrase “Worship leader” and it’s tricky to find an alternative..

Got any suggestions?
