Confused about Hell?

There’s been a great deal of discussion on the topic of “hell” over the last few months. Books have been written, magazine articles are debating it, people are asking me for my opinion on it everywhere I go – basically it seems a very ‘hot’ topic right now (pardon the pun!)

One thing I find fascinating, is that so many Christians don’t really know what the Bible says. I mean, they don’t know what the Biblical text does and does not contain. Or the difference between what is actually IN the Biblical text, and what emerged during post-Biblical times, as these doctrines were pieced together.

I put myself in that category too, in case you thought the paragraph above sounded judgemental!!

Studying theology at Oxford helped me get my head around a fair amount of it. But there are still things I discover, that I THOUGHT were Biblical ‘fact’, which turn out to be non-specifically in Scripture and the product of Church history. Through what lens do you view the Bible?

Rayban glasses are everywhere this summer. Lots of people are seeing the world through Rayban lenses, as they put them on and walk around, enjoying the sunshine.

In a similar way, we all see the world through a ‘lens’ – this is shaped by where we live, our family background, this point in time and history, and the things we surround ourselves with.

Very little we see is really free from this ‘lens’, even though we THINK we view the world objectively (without any bias or colour).

Surely one of the most visible lessons taught by the twentieth century has been the existence, not so much of a number of different realities, but of a number of different lenses with which to see the same reality -

Honesty in worship

I’ve been thinking a lot lately, about the dramatic type of lyrics we tend to sing in our worship songs.

How many times do we sing HUGE statements that we ‘kind of’ mean, but kind of don’t?
