There are things about ministry that we are all afraid of… things that hold us back and paralyse us from being the best worship leader we can be. For this blog post, I shall call them “worship monsters”!
When we were kids, I’m sure most of us were afraid of the dark, and checked under the bed to make sure there were no real monsters? (or maybe it was just me!).
I used to have a reocurring nightmare where an evil looking wolf chased me round and round our back yard (don’t laugh! and no, that wasn’t last week, it was when I was about four!). One day I was so fed up with the nightmare that I decided I’d just let the wolf catch me, and see what happened. So that night I did, and when I let him catch me, he disappeared and I never had the nightmare again.
It can be like that for us in ministry…when we face the thing that terrifies us, and switch on the light and find that the shadowy thing in the corner of the room was just a pile of clothes not a carzy beast, we can walk free from our fears, how ever big or small.
I’ll deal with some of the most common ‘worship monsters’ here:
* Fear of what your congregation think…
* Fear of what your pastor thinks…
* Worries about whether you look and sound ‘right’….
* Fear of getting it wrong, singing off key, or messing up a song…
* Fear of whether you are too old…or too young…
* Wondering whether your own songs (if you write) are good enough, or whether they’ll crash and burn!….
* Fear of being more programmed and organized, locking down on arrangements and sticking to them….
* Fear of stepping out into the spontaneous and being open to the Holy Spirit changing things…
* Concerns about trying a new instrument for the first time…(maybe you lead only vocals, and want to start playing guitar too…. or maybe you’re a guitar player and want to try leading from keys as well…)
* Trying out more visuals with your lyrics projection…
* Bringing more people on to your worship team….
* Letting certain people go from your worship team…
* Admitting it, if you are weary and burned out…
* Speaking up if you aren’t getting enough time to rest and recoup every week/month…
Do you resonate with any of these fears? Living with any of them holding you captive is debilitating.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments section, about what you are wrestling with (big or small) and how we can all face our ‘monsters’ and see them fade away and disappear!
